Louisville beats Belmont 4-2 after falling 4-0 to #8 Kentucky
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville men's tennis split the day at home on Sunday afternoon, beating Belmont 4-2 after falling to top-10 ranked Kentucky in the Battle of the Bluegrass earlier in the afternoon.
Kentucky 4, Louisville 0
The Battle of the Bluegrass was won by the No. 8-ranked Kentucky Wildcats (6-1), 4-0 at Bass-Rudd Tennis Center on Sunday.
The doubles point was clinched by the Wildcats, with the first match won being on Court 1 by the duo of Martin Breysach and Jaden Weekes, who defeated the Cardinal duo of Natan Rodrigues and Andre' Steinbach by a score of 6-2. This was followed immediately by a clinching match from Kentucky's Antoine Ghibaudo and Eli Stephenson over Louisville's Will Mayew and Hamza El Amine, 6-3.
Moving into the singles play, Kentucky took the first match between Rankin and Avendaño on Court 5 by a score of 6-1, 6-2.
Next to win was Cosnet over Nakanishi with a score of 6-2, 6-4, on Court 3.
The clinching point came from the No. 39 ranked ITA Singles player Jaden Weekes, who bested Steinbach 6-0, 1-6, 6-1 on Court 2. This granted Kentucky the 4-0 match win over the rival Cardinals.
Louisville 4, Belmont 2
The Cards began their second match of the day by dropping a tight doubles point. Avendaño and El Amine quickly took their match on Court 2 over Esunge Ndumbe and Charlie Robin, 6-2, before Belmont's Stefan Vedovelli and Esteban Ortiz defeated Rodrigues and Peña, 6-4, on Court 1 to even up doubles play. Diego Castro and Eli Mizerski defeated Piet Steveker and Russell Lokko, 7-5, on Court 3 to clinch the doubles point for the Bruins.
Louisville bounced back to begin singles play, as Avedaño defeated Castro 6-1, 6-0 on Court 4 and Peña bested Mizerski 6-1, 6-1 on Court 6 to put the Cards in front 2-1.
On Court 2, Nakanishi handled Belmont's Sabi Roi 6-3, 6-4 to give Louisville their third point and put them on the doorstep of victory.
The Bruins battled, but Mayew earned the Cards their fourth point of the match with a 6-7 (7-2), 6-3, 6-3 win over Robin on Court 3.
The Cardinals will travel to Ithaca, New York this week to take on Cornell on Friday, February 7 at 1 p.m..
