Louisville rallied back to win after dropping the doubles point
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated the Dayton Flyers by a score of 4-3 in a match that went down to the wire.
"Dayton competed very hard and we were fortunate things went out way," said head coach Rodrigo da Silva. "We were battling ourselves the entire day, but I am really glad Hamza [El Amine] persevered and got us the win. Time to go back to work and get ready to play Belmont and Tennessee State."
The Cards took the early momentum in the doubles competition with the duo of Russell Lokko and Pedro Cressoni sweeping their game on court three, 6-0. This was followed by a 6-2 Flyers victory on court two. The No. 24 ranked duo of Kyle McNally and Sturle Skigelstrand defeated No. 86 Andre' Steinbach and Matei Onofrei on court one 7-5 in a fiercely contested matchup that secured the doubles point for Dayton.
In the singles competition, the first singles point was won by Steinbach 6-2, 6-0 to tie the match for the Cards.
His win was swiftly followed by Onofrei with another decisive Cardinals victory 6-1, 6-1 to give the Cards the lead for the match.
Crossoni secured the third straight singles victory for the Cards with a 6-2, 6-0 score.
The Flyers responded with two straight victories on courts 6 and 1 to tie the match at 3-3.
The match came down to the final set of the matchup on court 2 between Hamza El Amine of Louisville and Mikkel Zinder of Dayton. El Amine prevailed 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 in an intense three-set victory that gave the Cards a 4-3 win in the match.
The Cardinals will remain at home with a doubleheader on Saturday, February 7. The first match will be against Belmont at 12 p.m. with the second match of the day to follow at 5 p.m. against Tennessee State.
