Cardinals Set to Take on No. 7 Pitt
September 12, 2024 | Men's Soccer
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET Friday in Pittsburgh.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's soccer team is set to play its second straight road match, traveling to take on Pitt on Friday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and will be televised on ACC Network Extra.
ABOUT THE CARDINALS
Leon Kondic blasted home the game-winner in the 90th minute to lift Louisville to a 1-0 victory over Kentucky in Lexington on Monday night.
Kondic's goal was Louisville's latest regulation winner since Brock Granger scored as time expired to defeat Cincinnati on Oct. 27, 2012.
SERIES HISTORY
Louisville is 7-1-0 all-time against Pitt and 3-0-0 against the Panthers in Pittsburgh.
The Cardinals won a wild 2-1 double overtime match at Pitt last November in the first round of the ACC Championship. The match was scoreless through regulation and the first overtime period before Mason Tatafu and Damien Barker John scored in the 104th and 105th minutes. Pitt got one back in the 106th minute but the Cards held on for the win.
NEW FACES APLENTY ON PITCH FOR CARDINALS
John Michael Hayden and his staff brought 15 newcomers into the fold for the 2024 season. Through the first five matches, those new faces are playing huge roles.
Nine different Cardinals have started all five matches, five of which are new to the Louisville program – Noah De Blasis, JP Jordan, Jack Lewis, Olayinka Ogunleye and Harvey Sellers.
Louisville newcomers have accounted for 3,022 minutes (61.4 percent), two goals and five assists.
FRESHMEN CLASS MAKING HUGE EARLY IMPACT
Louisville returned five starters and 12 players overall from the 2023 squad that reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Those returners have been huge for the Cards through five matches with Gage Guerra, Sander Roed, Ethan Subachan and Josh Jones combining for 16 of Louisville's 28 points.
However, the freshmen class is making its mark as well. Seven different freshmen have played meaningful minutes so far, including Monday's match at Kentucky in which five freshmen were in the starting lineup.
Leon Kondic scored the game-winner in the 90th minute at Kentucky. Jack Lewis assisted on Kondic's winner and tallied a winner of his own against Bellarmine. TJ Kahoalii and Chase Vazquez assisted on the Lewis goal, while Noah De Blasis (Jacksonville) and Kondic (Tulsa) also have assists on game-winning goals.
Defensively, De Blasis and Olayinka Ogunleye have started all five matches flanking Jones in the backline. De Blasis has played all 450 minutes this season, while Ogunleye has logged 411.
