PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The University of Louisville men's soccer team took a 3-2 loss at No. 7 Pitt on Friday night.
Louisville (4-2-0) dropped to 0-2-0 in ACC play with the loss, both of which have been by just one goal.
Pitt (5-1-0, 2-0-0 ACC) jumped on the Cardinals on Friday, scoring in the 18th minute and then converting a penalty kick in the 26th minute to hold a 2-0 lead through the first half.
The match remained 2-0 through the 60-minute mark before the Cardinals finally broke through.
Gage Guerra won possession back along the endline putting the ball on the foot of Michael Lee on the left flank. Lee sent a cross to the opposite side of the box that Ethan Subachan headed back into the center.
Gaetano D'Argento took the bouncing ball and got a left-footed shot to deflect into the net for his first goal of the season.
Pitt answered very quickly, finding the back of the net just 30 seconds later. However, VAR review disallowed the goal with an offside call.
The Panthers then had a breakaway in the 65th minute. Harvey Sellers charged out of goal, but the attacker chipped the ball over him and on target. Josh Jones came to the rescue though, sliding in to deflect the ball away and keep the deficit at just one.
Louisville narrowly missed tying the match in the 72nd minute, as Guerra's attempt banged off the crossbar and stayed out.
Pitt stretched the margin back to two with just under 10 minutes to play, but the Cardinals didn't go away quietly.
After a few deflections in the box, Bilal Camara played a ground pass straight on to Jones near the penalty spot. The senior turned and put it home for his second of the year leaving the Cards with a little more than five minutes to try and find the equalizer.
Sander Roed had the only Louisville shot of the final five minutes. The shot from outside the box sailed just over the top right corner and the Panthers were able to see the match to the finish line from there.
Pitt outshot the Cardinals 12-8 on Friday with both teams even with two corner kicks.
Louisville will have a week between matches, taking the pitch next Friday at home against Syracuse. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
