Roed’s Late Strike Secures Draw for Cardinals
September 20, 2024 | Men's Soccer
Sander Roed scored in the 90th minute to help Louisville to a 1-1 draw against Syracuse.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Sander Roed buried a free kick in the final minute to give the University of Louisville men's soccer team a 1-1 draw against Syracuse on Friday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Louisville (4-2-1, 0-2-1 ACC) was staring at a 1-0 deficit and playing a man down due to injury in the closing minutes on Friday evening.
A foul just outside the box with 46 seconds remaining set up Roed's heroics. The senior stepped up from the left side of the top of the box, bent his shot around the wall and inside the far post to draw the Cardinals level.
The goal was the third of the year for Roed, and his first in the last four matches. It was Louisville's second 90th minute goal of the season following Leon Kondic's winner in the final minute at Kentucky.
Friday's match had no scoring on either side for the first 72 minutes before Syracuse (3-2-3, 0-1-2) finally broke through.
The Orange converted off a Louisville turnover in its defensive end and grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 73rd minute.
Prior to the final strike by Roed, Louisville's best scoring chance came minutes after Syracuse jumped in front.
In the 77th minute, a Louisville free kick was deflected around the box and found the feet of Noah De Blasis. The freshman got off a shot ticketed for the bottom left corner, but the Syracuse keeper reacted quickly to knock it away and keep the Orange in front.
Shots were kept to a minimum on Friday night with just eight per side. Harvey Sellers made three saves in goal for the Cards before exiting due to injury. Ola Arntsen played the final 2:13 in goal for Louisville.
The Cardinals are back in action on Tuesday night with UAB making the trip to Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
