September 09, 2024 | Men's Soccer
Louisville defeated Kentucky 1-0 in Lexington on Monday night.
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Leon Kondic found the back of the net with 53 seconds left on the clock to give the 15th-ranked University of Louisville men's soccer program a 1-0 victory at No. 16 Kentucky in the annual Battle of the Bluegrass on Monday night.
The two sides played scoreless through the first 89 minutes, but the Cardinals got the final strike.
A quick throw left the ball at the feet of Jack Lewis, who played a quick pass through to Kondic in the right side of the box. The freshman loaded up and uncorked a right-footed blast off the outside of the foot and beat the keeper inside the far post.
The goal was the first of the collegiate career for Kondic and gave Louisville (4-1-0) its first win in Lexington since 2014.
In an action-packed, physical match, the two teams were kept off the scoreboard despite a combined 16 shots in the opening half.
It was more of the same after the break, eventually leading to each side having a player sent off 57 minutes in.
Olayinka Ogunleye was shown a second yellow for the Cards, while a straight red was given to a Kentucky player after a long review stoppage, leaving the match with 10 players per side for the remaining 33 minutes.
Kentucky (1-2-1) got off a flurry of shots over the next 10 minutes, but the Cardinals controlled much of the possession over the final 20.
Louisville had five shots over the next 15 minutes, forcing three saves, however the match remained at the scoreless stalemate until Kondic stepped forward in the 90th minute.
Harvey Sellers was excellent in goal on Monday night. The sophomore keeper made a season-best five saves on the way to his second clean sheet of the year.
The Cardinals ended the night with a 20-16 advantage in shots, 8-5 on target, and a 9-5 edge in corner kicks.
Louisville remains on the road as it heads back into conference play this weekend. The Cardinals take on Pitt on Friday in their first ACC road match of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET in Pittsburgh.
