Cardinals and Bearcats Play to 1-1 Draw
August 29, 2024 | Women's Soccer
Karsyn Cherry scored her third goal of the season in the draw
CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Louisville women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw on the road against Cincinnati (2-1-1) Thursday night at Gettler Stadium. With the draw, the Cardinals (3-0-2) remain unbeaten through the first five matches of the season for the first time since the 2019 campaign.
It was a slow start for the Cards until the 15th minute when it looked like they scored the opening goal of the match. Betsy Huckaby found Mackenzie Geigle streaking past the Bearcats back line and her shot beat the keeper but the officials flag was up for offsides.
Louisville did not get its first shot of the match in the 19th minute and it was Geigle again getting behind the Bearcats defense. She tried a shot from distance to catch the keeper off her line but it was saved.
That was the only shot on goal by either team as it was scoreless at halftime. Cincinnati led 5-3 in shots but none of them reached Erynn Floyd in net. The Cardinals have not allowed a shot on goal in the first half in any of their five games so far this season.
In the opening minutes of the second half, the Bearcats had a chance as Ellie Flower came streaking down the right side. Karsyn Cherry was able to catch her and made a nice tackle to block Flower's shot out of play.
Less than five minutes later, it was Cherry coming through on the offensive end. Brooke Dardano sent a high cross into the box from the corner kick and it was Cherry who connected on the header for her third goal of the season, all coming off corner kicks. It was Dardano's team-leading fifth assist of the season and the Cards were up 1-0.
Cincinnati equalized in the 65th minute after their initial shot was blocked but Rylee Felton was able to score on the rebound and it was 1-1 with 25 minutes left. The score would remain 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes as neither team threatened in the offensive end.
Louisville returns to campus and will begin a three-game homestand this weekend. The Cardinals welcome Evansville to Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium on Sunday, September 1. The Cardinals and Aces will square off at 7 p.m. ET and the match will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
