Mackenzie Geigle tallied her first career brace in the win
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville women's soccer team continued its strong start to the season with the 3-0 win over Evansville Sunday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. With the win, Louisville (4-0-2) matches its win total from the 2023 season. The Cardinals also remain unbeaten through the first six games of the season.
Offense continues to be the story for the Cardinals this season as they scored three goals in the win over the Aces. The Cardinals have scored 17 goals in six games this season, surpassing their goal total of 15 from 18 games last season. It is their fourth multi-goal game of the season, matching last season's total.
Mackenzie Geigle tallied her first career brace, scoring a goal in each half. She has four goals this season, tied for the team lead. Geigle is tied for the team lead with Karsyn Cherry, who scored her fourth goal of the season in the first half. Cherry also assisted on Geigle's opening goal and set a career high with three points on the night. Brooke Dardano entered the night tied for the national lead in assists with five and she tallied her sixth on Cherry's goal in the first half.
Geigle opened the scoring in the 11th minute and it started with Cherry's pass to Geigle, who was just outside the box. Her first touch got past the first Evansville defender and she fired a shot inside the near post for the goal. It was Cherry's first career assist and Geigle's third goal of the year.
The Cardinals doubled their lead in the 37th minute with a corner kick from Dardano. Her in-swinging ball reached Cherry on the edge of the six-yard box and her header towards the far post beat the keeper for the goal. It was the second-straight game Cherry has scored a goal on a corner kick from Dardano. All four of Cherry's goals this season have come from corner kicks.
Louisville led 2-0 at the half and did not allow a shot from the Aces. The Cardinals have yet to allow a single shot in the first half of all four home games this season. Louisville has not allowed a shot on goal in the first half in all six games this year.
In the second half, Geigle was able to get her second goal of the match in the 59th minute. Dardano's initial shot went off the woodwork and deflected out to the left side. Gianna Angelillo settled the ball and sent a cross back into the box for Geigle's run towards the far post. She beats the defender for the header and sends it into the back of the net for the brace and a 3-0 lead for the Cards.
That would be the final score as the Louisville defense only allowed one shot on goal in the second half. It is the second clean sheet for the Cardinals this season after shutting out Bellarmine in the season opener.
Up next for the Cardinals will be the second game of a three-game homestand. The Cardinals welcome UT Martin to Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium on Thursday, September 5. The Cardinals and Skyhawks will square off at 7:30 p.m. ET and the match will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
