September 05, 2024 | Women's Soccer
It is their second-straight clean sheet and third of the season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville women's soccer team put on another defensive clinic at home in its 2-0 win over UT Martin Thursday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals (5-0-2) continued their torrid start to the season as they remain unbeaten through the first seven games of the year. It is the first time since the 2019 season that they are unbeaten through the first seven games to begin the season.
Offense and defense were on full display in the win for the Cards. It was the fifth multi-goal game this season for Louisville, surpassing the four multi-goal games they had all of last season. Karsyn Cherry scored for the third-straight game and she leads the team with five goals this season. Gianna Angelillo scored her first goal with the Cardinals to open the scoring and she is the 10th different player to score this season for the Cards. The defense tied a season low with just one shot allowed all game. It was the first game this season the Cards did not allow a shot on goal the entire game.
The first half was relatively quiet on the offensive end but the Cardinals had the better of the chances. Lauryn Contini just missed on a header in the box from a great ball in by Hadley Snyder in the 10th minute.
As the match headed into the final minute of the first half, the Cardinals capitalized on a turnover near midfield. Amelia Swinarski got a hold of the ball and played it into open space as Angelillo came rushing up field. She played the ball ahead of the defenders and slotted it into the back of the net to open the scoring. It was her first goal of the season for the Cards and gave them a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
Louisville held the 6-1 shot advantage in the first half and did not allow a shot on goal for the Skyhawks. The Cards have yet to allow a shot on goal in the first half in any of their seven games this season.
The Cardinals kept the scoring up in the second half as they doubled their lead in the 48th minute. The Cards sent a corner kick long and it was brought in by Brooklyn Lee on the opposite end of the field. Her cross back into the box found the head of Cherry and she scored her team-best fifth goal of the season. It was Lee's first career assist and put the Cards up 2-0.
Louisville's defense put on a clinic in the second half and did not allow a single shot over the final 45 minutes of play. With the win, it was their second-consecutive clean sheet and third of the season. All three have come at home this season and they have only allowed 11 shots total in the five home games this season.
Up next for the Cardinals will be the third and final game of their homestand to close out the weekend on Sunday. The Cardinals welcome regional foe Dayton to Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium for a 7 p.m. ET match that will be streamed on the ACC Network. Sunday's home game will be the final home game for the Cardinals for a while, as their next home game following this Sunday will not be until September 29.
