Cards can’t overcome the early deficit
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville women's soccer team dropped its first contest of the 2024 season after the 1-0 defeat to Dayton Sunday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. Dayton got on the scoresheet in the fourth minute and the Cardinals threatened throughout the night but were unable to find the equalizer.
Dayton wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, capitalizing on a loose ball in the fourth minute. The Cardinals cleared a ball out of the box but Jenna Hallbeck was the first one to the loose ball. As she turned back towards goal, she quickly took a right-footed shot that curved past the keeper and inside the right post for the opening goal of the match.
That was the first time the Cardinals had allowed a shot on goal in the first half of any game this season. It was also the first time the Cardinals have trailed at any point this season.
Louisville almost found the equalizer in the 13th minute and it all started with Fina Davy. Her original shot was block but she stuck with the ball and after a scrum, the ball was tackled out ton the foot of Mackenzie Geigle in the box. She took an attempt on goal but it sailed on her over the crossbar and out of play.
In the 15th minute, the Cardinals almost scored again after a run up the left side from Brooke Dardano. She sent a low cross towards the near post and Lauryn Contini was first to the ball but her volley went wide of the net.
Louisville trailed 1-0 into the half although they had a 5-3 advantage in shots over the first 45 minutes. It was the first time this season Louisville had trailed at halftime.
In the second half, the Flyers looked like they doubled their lead in the 53rd minute. Dayton scored on a header off a corner kick but the referee went to VAR to look at the play. It was determined that the header deflected off a player that was offside and the goal was taken off the board.
Moments later, Betsy Huckaby nearly had the breakthrough the Cards were searching for in the 61st minute. She pounced on a loose ball and took a volley towards goal. It kept bending down but it deflected off the top crossbar and out of play.
The last chance for the Cards came in the 74th minute as Hadley Snyder sent a cross into the box. Geigle settled the ball and sent it across the box to Piper Davidson. She got her head on the ball and sent it on frame but it was saved. That was the final quality chance for the Cardinals as they fell for the first time this season.
Up next for the Cardinals will be ACC play when they hit the road next weekend. Louisville travels north to Pittsburgh to take on the Panthers on September 14. The Cardinals and Panthers will square off from the Steel City at 7 p.m. ET and the match will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
