Cardinals Conclude Homestand with Dayton
September 07, 2024 | Women's Soccer
Louisville is riding a seven-game unbeaten streak to begin the season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville women's soccer team is back in action this weekend as it is set to close out its current three-game homestand. The Cardinals are set to face regional foe Dayton Sunday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals and Flyers will square off at 7 p.m. ET and the match will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
Louisville is unbeaten (5-0-2) through the first seven games of the season. It is the first time since the 2019 season that the Cards began the season unbeaten through seven games. The offense and defense have both been stellar this year for the Cards.
Offensive, Louisville has surpassed a number of their season totals from last year. The Cardinals have scored 19 goals this season after scoring just 15 goals all of last year. The Cards have 10 different goal scorers this season after just having nine last season. They have five multi-goal games this year after having just four all of last year.
Karsyn Cherry has been a big part of the offensive improvement. She leads the team with five goals this season, which is the most in the NCAA by a defender this season. She has scored a goal in each of the last three games after scoring in each of the first two games to begin the season. Her five goals are the most by a Louisville player in a single season since Emina Ekic scored seven in the 2020 season.
Defensively, the Cardinals have pitched two clean sheets in a row and have shut out opponents three times this season. At home, they are exceptionally stout defensively. Louisville has only allowed 11 total shots in their five home games this season. Overall, the Cards have yet to allow a shot on goal in the first half of any of their seven games this season.
Sunday's matchup will be the 17th meeting between the two schools and the Cardinals trail the all-time series 4-12. Although, the Cardinals have had much of the recent success between the two programs. The Cardinals have won four of the last five matchups and each of the last two meetings in Louisville.
