Cardinals Push Past Norse, 2-1
August 25, 2024 | Women's Soccer
Amber Jackson and Amelia Swinarski both tallied goals in the win
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. — The University of Louisville women's soccer team (3-0-1) remained unbeaten on the season after claiming their first road win of the season with the 2-1 victory over Northern Kentucky (0-3-0) on Sunday night. The Cardinals scored twice in the first half and did not look back as they picked up their third win of the season. The Cards are unbeaten through the first four games of the season for the first time since the 2021 season.
Louisville pushed forward in the opening minutes and got on the scoresheet in the 17th minute off of a set piece. Brooke Dardano sent an in-swinging corner towards the six-yard box where Amber Jackson beat the keeper to the ball and headed it into the back of the net. It was her team-leading third goal of the season and Dardano's team-best fourth assist of the year to give the Cards an early 1-0 lead.
The Cards doubled their lead in the 33rd minute and it was by a newcomer making her first collegiate appearance. Amelia Swinarski jumped on a loose ball from just outside the box and took her left-footed shot inside the right post and past the keeper for her first career goal. She is the ninth different goal scorer for the Cards this season and put them up 2-0.
The Cards took the 2-0 lead into the halftime break. Louisville held a 7-1 advantage in shots over the first 45 minutes. It was the first shot they have allowed in a first half through their four games this season.
Northern Kentucky cut into the deficit in the 72nd minute when they scored off a long free kick. The ball was headed just outside the box by a Louisville player and it ended up in the back of the net and the Cards lead was down to 2-1.
That is as close as the Norse would get as the Cardinals did not allow another shot over the last 19 minutes of the match to secure the win. Erynn Floyd picked up the win after she played the first half of the match. The only shot the Norse got off in the first 45 minutes hit the crossbar as the Louisville defense limited their offensive chances.
The Cardinals have another road game on deck next week as they will head back up I-71 to face another regional foe. The Cardinals will take on the Bearcats on Thursday night at 7 p.m. ET and the match will be streamed on ESPN+.
