Somov Advances to 100 Breaststroke Semifinals on Day 1 of Olympic Games

PARIS -- The 2024 Paris Olympic Games began bright and early for the University of Louisville swimmers, who were off the blocks beginning at 5 a.m. ET Saturday morning at the Paris La Défense Arena.

The highlight of the first session came when Evgenii Somov advanced to the semifinals of the 100M breaststroke after posting a 59.83 to qualify 13th overall. Caspar Corbeau, who swims for Texas, put up the fastest prelim time, going 59.04. A tightly contested semifinal is on tap as there is just .96 difference from the top to bottom in the field. The semifinals will run Saturday afternoon at 3:10 ET.Â

Denis Petrashov, who swims the 100M breaststroke for Israel, boarded a 1:00.42 to finish 23rd overall.

Distance expert Ilia Sibirtsev, swimming for Uzbekistan, was third in his heat of the 400M freestyle, touching in 3:51.52 and 26th overall. Germany's Lukas Martens will be the top qualifier going into the semifinals after boarding a 3:44.13.

In the first relay event of the Paris Games, the Cardinals had two swimmers on the blocks. Andrej Barna anchored Serbias 4x100 with the fastest split of the four with a 47.42 as the Serbs boarded a 3:14.68 to touch fifth in their heat and 11th overall. Denis Loktev swam the third leg for Israel and split 48.87 as the Israelis touched in 3:15.41 to finish third in their heat and 13th overall. The top eight teams advance.
