April 21, 2024 | Women's Lacrosse
This is the first ACC Tournament win for the Cardinals in program history.
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Nicole Perroni led with four goals and three caused turnovers to lead the ninth-seeded Louisville Cardinals to a 13-11 win over eighth-seeded Virginia Tech this afternoon in the first round of the 2024 ACC Women's Lacrosse Tournament.
Louisville will travel to Charlotte, N.C. to play Syracuse (No. 1 seed) on Wednesday, April 24 at 11 a.m. ET.
"The girls battled for 60 minutes today," said Head Coach Scott Teeter. "They had a response to every one of their mistakes. They were all contributing and supporting each other which gave us a really great team win."
The Cards started off steady with a man-down goal by Perroni sandwiched between two Virginia Tech goals, giving the Hokies their only lead of the game at 2-1. Kokoro Nakazawa tied things up at two apiece with an unassisted goal and Allegra Catalano scored a free position goal to grab the lead. Kokoro Nakazawa closed out the first frame with a goal assisted by her sister, Negai, and the Cards were up 4-2 going into the second quarter.
The Hokies outscored the Cards 6-5 in the second quarter but Louisville still held a one goal lead going into the locker room at half.
Perroni scored her third goal of the day and Maggie McMahon grabbed her second of the day to give Louisville an 11-9 lead to end the third quarter.
Izzy Seikel and Perroni scored back-to-back goals in the fourth quarter to secure the two-goal win.
"Nicole was her steady self today," said Coach Teeter. "She contributed all over the field and made some big plays when we needed it."
The Cards will advance to the ACC Tournament Quarterfinals, giving Head Coach Scott Teeter is first tournament win in his Louisville tenure.
Wednesday's game against Syracuse will be broadcast on the ACCN at 11 a.m. ET.
