Cardinals Take 9-1 Loss in Home Opener

Louisville was defeated 9-1 by Xavier on Wednesday.
Louisville (0-3) took just its third loss in a home opener under Dan McDonnell.
The Cardinals fell behind early on Wednesday, allowing a single run in each of the first five innings.
Louisville tallied its first run in the third inning. Lucas Moore singled with one away before swiping second and moving to third on a throwing error. JT Benson then singled through the left side for the Cardinals' only run of the evening.
Xavier (1-3) plated another run in the eighth and three more in the ninth, while the Cardinals struggled to just 1-for-8 at the plate with runners in scoring position.
Benson and Luke Napleton went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Cardinals.
Carson Liggett (0-1) started for the Cards, allowing three runs in 2.2 innings. Ty Starke pitched a scoreless inning in his collegiate debut.
Louisville welcomes St. Bonaventure to Jim Patterson Stadium this weekend with the series set to begin on Friday at 3 p.m. ET.
