Three Cardinals scored four goals this afternoon
BOULDER, Colo. – The University of Louisville women's lacrosse team moved to 0-2 this afternoon with a heartbreaking loss to Colorado, 16-15.
"The adjustments we made after the first half were impressive. But, whenever you give up seven goals in the first quarter, it's difficult to come back from that," said Coach Scott Teeter. "I'm proud of the girls for battling for the full game and having opportunities in the end."
Louisville started off with back-to-back goals from Kylea Dobson, giving them a 2-1 lead in the beginning of the first quarter. However, Colorado's Madeline Pisani and Maddie Shoup teamed up for five consecutive goals for the Buffs. Allegra Catalano scored her first goal on a free position shot and the Cards were down 7-3 after the first frame.
Nicole Perroni then scored an early second quarter goal, her first of the afternoon. Both Negai and Korkoro Nakazawa closed out the half with a goal apiece. Louisville went into the locker room down 11-7.
Perroni came out with an immediate goal to start the second half, followed by another for Catalano and another for Negai Nakazawa. Dobson put the Cards within two on an assisted goal from Lauren Figas and Catalano closed the gap to one goal at 12-11 in the third quarter.
Three straight goals from Colorado's Eve Hritzuk provided a four-goal differential for the Buffs. However, four straight goals from the Cards tied the game at 15-15 with 3:43 left in regulation. The Cards grabbed the draw control but a crucial save by Colorado's Danielle Heintz gave the Buffs possession again. Hritzuk responded with her sixth goal of the afternoon and the Cards were unable to score in the last 1:37.
Perroni recorded her 100th career goal this afternoon and continued her 38-game goal scoring streak, the longest in program history. Sara Addeche had 10 saves, her eighth career game with double digit saves.
"I am very excited for Nicole Perroni on scoring her 100th career goal today," said Teeter. "She was a warrior on the field this afternoon and I could not be more proud of her."
Louisville will return for their home opener on Friday, Feb. 16 against the Marquette Golden Eagles. The first draw will be at 12 p.m. ET at UofL Lacrosse Stadium.
