Swimming and Diving Participate in Media Day
January 16, 2024 | Swimming & Diving
Next up for the Cards is Kentucky Jan. 27 at the Ralph Wright Natatorium
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville head swimming coach Arthur Albiero long with team captains Dalton Lowe and Gabi Albiero were available at the Cardinals' Spring Sport Media Day on Wednesday afternoon.Â
The full press conference is available here .
Opening Statement from Arthur Albiero: "It is an exciting time for swimming. It is an Olympic year, so that always adds a little more to it in our sport. Everybody pays a lot more attention to swimming in an Olympic year so we love that opportunity. For us, as a program, coming back from London in 2012, we said, 'let's launch Project Rio' and now everyone who touches our program from the massage therapists to our nutritionist, to our coaching staff is now thinking that way. We have parlayed that into the next one in Tokyo and now it is Project Paris. But really it is about putting people in the best position to compete in that setting. Different countries have different qualifiers, different processes and the US has one of the tougher ones.  The US Olympic Trial is one day, one shot, do it or go home. Of our international guys, we have three that have already qualified for the Olympics. So it is exciting and real, not just something you talk about. We have been very fortunate as a program, one of the few collegiate programs in the country that has produced Olympic swimmers for the US in the last two Olympic cycles. We are excited to have another opportunity to compete. This season, I am excited to watch us compete and these two have done a great job as leaders and captains. They have taken upon themselves to really set the tone for the rest of the group. They have shown the work in the pool and created camaraderie and the vibe we have with this group is great. If we can truly compete together in an individual sport, swimming and diving, which is as individual as they come, and perform with a team mindset, we will have a chance. A chance to have fun, a chance to do fun things and as a coach that is my priority. We put people in the position to be successful. We have a couple of meets left to set the tone. On January 27, we host Kentucky at home and enough said because that is always fun. It is the next opportunity to compete and we are in a great spot."Â
Rankings: The Louisville women are ranked No. 6 and the men are No. 13 in the latest Collegiate Swim Coaches Association of American (CSCAA).Â
