Cardinals Open 2023 Season Against No. 16 Tulsa

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET Thursday at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's soccer team begins the 2023 season on Thursday night against No. 16 Tulsa at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET and will be televised on ACC Network Extra.
ABOUT THE CARDINALS
John Michael Hayden begins his fifth season in charge of the Louisville program, where he owns a 34-29-7 overall record. Hayden returns eight starters and 16 players overall from the 2022 team.
The Cardinals posted a 9-6-3 overall record and 4-3-1 conference mark in 2022. Louisville finished third in the ACC Atlantic Division and earned a NCAA Tournament bid for the third time in four seasons under Hayden's leadership.
SERIES HISTORY
Louisville and Tulsa are squaring off for just the second time on Thursday night, with the Cardinals having won the previous meeting back in 1994.
CARDS PICKED THIRD IN ATLANTIC IN ACC PRESEASON POLL
Louisville was picked to finish fourth in the Atlantic Division in the ACC Men's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll.
The Cardinals received 34 overall points, slotting in fourth behind Clemson (58), Wake Forest (56) and Syracuse (53). Boston College (23) and NC State (22) rounded out the rest of the Atlantic Division.
Pitt (56) narrowly edged out Duke (51) and Virginia (50) for the top spot in the Coastal Division. North Carolina (39), Notre Dame (28) and Virginia Tech (22) filled out the division.
ROED NAMED TO ACC PRESEASON WATCH LIST
Junior midfielder Sander Roed was the Louisville representative on the ACC Preseason Watch List.
Roed played in all 18 matches as a sophomore in 2022, starting all but one. He finished second in the ACC with eight assists on the season, the seventh-highest total in Louisville program history.
The native of Tranby, Norway is a two-time All-ACC selection, earning third team honors in 2021 and first team recognition last fall.
LOUISVILLE NAMES TWO CAPTAINS FOR 2022 SEASON
Graduate student Ryan Troutman and junior Josh Jones were selected as the team captains for the Cardinals this fall.
Troutman returns for his sixth collegiate season in 2023 and his second in a Louisville uniform. The Louisville native started the final 12 matches in goal for the Cardinals last fall, posting a 6-4-2 overall record with five clean sheets.
Jones has started 34 of 36 matches during the first two years of his Louisville career. He led the Cardinals with over 1,600 minutes played in 2022 and was one of two players to start all 18 matches. Despite playing center back, Jones has recorded five career goals and a pair of assists.
CARDS RECEIVING VOTES IN PRESEASON TOP 25
Louisville will open up the 2023 season just on the outside of the United Soccer Coaches preseason rankings. The Cardinals were one of 12 teams receiving votes outside of the top 25.
The Cards spent much of the 2022 campaign ranked, reaching as high as No. 9 in the poll in late October.
Louisville has been ranked in each non-COVID affected season under John Michael Hayden.
CARDINALS SCHEDULE FILLED WITH RANKED OPPONENTS
Louisville opens up the regular season against 16th-ranked Tulsa, kicking off a loaded 2023 schedule.
The Cards' slate features nine matches against teams that played in last season's NCAA Tournament, four of which reached the Round of 16.
Louisville will square off against seven of the top 20 teams in the United Soccer Coaches preseason rankings - No. 1 Syracuse, No. 3 Kentucky, No. 9 Clemson, No. 10 UNC Greensboro, No. 15 Virginia, No. 16 Tulsa and No. 18 Wake Forest, while having played No. 2 Indiana in a preseason exhibition.
EXPERIENCED GROUP LEADS LOUISVILLE INTO 2023
John Michael Hayden returns eight of his 11 starters from last season, including the top six in minutes played. The Cardinals also added three transfers that logged at least 900 minutes on the pitch last fall.
The Cards returning production includes 15 of 26 (57.7 percent) goals, 21 of 28 (75 percent) assists, 51 of 80 (63.8 percent) points, 142 of 198 (71.8 percent) starts and 13,506 of 18,020 (75 percent) minutes.
ROED CLIMBING CAREER ASSISTS CHART
Louisville midfielder Sander Roed had one of the top assist seasons in program history in 2022, tying for the seventh-most in program history with eight.
Roed enters the 2023 campaign with 13 for his two-year career, just one shy of cracking Louisville's all-time top 10.
Tim Kubel (2014-17) owns the program's career record with 26.
