LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's soccer team opened the 2023 season with a 1-0 victory over No. 16 Tulsa on Thursday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Konstantinos Georgallides netted the game-winning goal in the 74th minute to lift the Cards to the win. Alex Svetanoff made six saves in net to record a clean sheet in his first collegiate match.
In a battle of NCAA Tournament teams from one year ago, the two sides played a very even match. Tulsa got the opening look of the match just over 60 seconds in resulting in Svetanoff's first save of the night.
The redshirt-freshman turned aside four on-target shots in the opening 45 minutes, while the Cardinals forced the opposing keeper to make three saves of their own.
The match went to halftime scoreless with Tulsa holding a narrow 8-7 advantage in shots.
It was much of the same in the second half with Svetanoff keeping an early shot out and adding his sixth save of the night in the 64th minute.
Louisville then capitalized on a scoring opportunity 10 minutes later. Georgallides had a shot blocked and Sander Roed had a look in close at net but was denied by the keeper.
The rebound bounced outside the box where Parker Forbes won the race to a 50-50 ball. His pass found the feet of Georgallides and the sophomore fired home a left-footed shot for the breakthrough.
Louisville's defense stood strong the rest of the way, keeping the Golden Hurricane out of the net for the shutout.
The Cardinals finished with a 15-13 shot advantage in the win with both sides tallying six saves on the night.
Louisville will now turn around quickly for a Monday home match against in-city foe Bellarmine. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
