Cardinals Drop Conference Game Against No. 22 Clemson
April 01, 2023 | Women's Lacrosse
CLEMSON, S.C. – Negai Nakazawa matched her season-high two goals as the University of Louisville lacrosse program fell 19-8 to No. 22 Clemson at the Historic Riggs Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals move to 4-8 on the season and 1-5 in Atlantic Coast Conference. Clemson advanced to 10-4 overall and 2-4 in the ACC.
"The turning point came at the end of the second quarter," said head coach Scott Teeter. "We made a couple of plays and turned the ball over to give up four late in the second quarter. Clemson made us pay for our mistakes. It just comes down to them making plays and us not."
The Tigers got an early lead, scoring two goals in the first four minutes before Allegra Catalano earned one of her own on a pass from Nicole Perroni, which extended Perroni's point-scoring streak. Perroni earned her second assist of the game as Nakazawa scored another goal for the Cards. UofL kept the game within one to finish the first quarter.
Clemson was the first team to score in the second quarter. Nakazawa answered back with a goal in the 12th minute on a pass from Tiffany Natoli. The Cards continued to battle scoring three more goals with less than five minutes in the half. Rian Adkins knocked in her second goal of her career on a free position shot. Hannah Morris scored on a pass from Kylea Dobson, and Perroni netted a free position goal to extend her goal-scoring streak. Clemson scored four goals in the final three minutes to go up 11-6 into the half.
Clemson came out firing after the half scoring five unanswered goals in the third quarter.
Natoli shot in her second goal of the season with less than ten minutes left in the game. Alexa Steffens scored the final goal for the Cardinals before the Tigers answered with three straight goals to end the game.
Sara Addeche earned 44:16 minutes guarding the net with two saves. J Pleck played for the remaining 15:44 minutes.
Perroni had a team-high three points, nine shots, three draw controls, and one caused turnover. She extended her point-scoring streak and goal-scoring streak to 32.
Maggie Foster led the defense with two ground balls.
