Cards Fall to Top-Ranked Syracuse
March 25, 2023 | Women's Lacrosse
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Hannah Morris and Izzy Seikel led the way with two goals each as the University of Louisville lacrosse team fell 17-5 on Saturday afternoon to No. 1 Syracuse at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium.
The loss moved the Cardinals to 4-6 on the season, 1-4 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Orange advanced to 11-0 overall and 5-0 in conference play.
"I think today was a tale of two halves," said head coach Scott Teeter. "Our start was okay, and we made some saves and defensive stops, but we struggled clearing the ball. Anytime you give the top team in the nation second opportunities, they're going to make you pay. That lead to some early goals and Syracuse capitalized on their defensive transitions to give their fast break goals off of our scoring opportunity. In the second half, we challenged them to break it down into five minute segments and it was 5-3 in the second half. We got some different players in there today and Syracuse also emptied their bench toward the end so there were some valuable minutes out there."
The Orange came out firing to score six straight goals in the first quarter before a free position goal from Morris put the Cards on the board. Syracuse scored six more times throughout the first half. Nicole Perroni earned her 26th goal of the season, firing in a free position goal with six minutes left of the half.
The Cardinals were able to slow down the Syracuse offense in the second half, keeping them to five goals. Morris scored on another free position shot late in the third quarter. Seikel notched in two of her own goals in the remaining four minutes of the game.
Sara Addeche guarded the net for 25:38 minutes, recording four saves and one ground ball. J Pleck protected the goal for the other 34:22 minutes and earned four saves.
Perroni extended her goal-scoring streak and her point-scoring streak to 30. She added three ground balls, three draw controls, and three caused turnovers to the stat sheet.
Negai Nakazawa had two shots with three ground balls and two caused turnovers while Olivia Toll had one ground ball and one caused turnover.
UofL has a quick turnaround as they travel to Ohio State for a Midwest matchup on Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET.
