Louisville kept the match scoreless until the 67th minute
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville women's soccer team was back at home and took on one of the toughest teams in the country in the second-ranked Florida State Seminoles Thursday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals kept the match scoreless for 67th minute before the Seminoles broke through and Florida State came away with a 2-0 victory.
As the rain was coming down in the first half, neither team was able to gather much momentum in their respective attacking thirds and offensive chances were limited.
The Seminoles almost took the lead in the fifth minute as they had a free ball right on the goal line. Karsyn Cherry was able to get in front of the shot from Jordynn Dudley and cleared it off the line to keep the game level.
In the 24th minute, Dudley had a ball played up to her and she got in behind the Louisville defense. Erynn Floyd came off her line to take down the angle and she was able to deflect Dudley's shot out of play for the save and kept the match scoreless.
In the second half, the rain continued to fall at Lynn Stadium and most of the play was in the midfield area.
The Cardinals had a chance to take the lead in the 51st minute after Fiona Gaißer created a turnover in the offensive third. After taking the ball over, Gaißer immediately turned towards goal and fired off a shot as the Seminoles keeper was away from the net. Roque was able to get back in position and made the save on Gaißer's shot to keep the game scoreless.
Florida State broke through on the scoresheet in the 67th minute for the first goal of the match. Taylor Huff scored for the Noles off the assist from Amelia Van Zanten. It was the latest the Seminoles had scored their first goal of the match since Sept. 10 against Florida.
The Seminoles added to their lead in the 77th minute after a goal from Maria Alagoa to put the game out of reach.
The Cardinals will stay at home to close out the two-game homestand on Sunday afternoon when they welcome Syracuse to Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals will host the Orange at 1 p.m. ET and the match will be streamed on ACC Network Extra. It will be Senior Day as the Cardinals honor the 2023 Senior Class prior to the game.
