Louisville tallied two goals within three minutes to secure the win
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville women's soccer team got back on track with a 2-1 win over Syracuse on Senior and Alumni Day Sunday afternoon at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. Freshman Betsy Huckaby scored her first career goal to open the scoring and sophomore Emersen Jennings tallied her second of the season moments later to put the Cards in front.
It was a scoreless first half between the two teams and the Cardinals had the best opportunity over the first 45 minutes. Emerson Jennings had a shot that deflected off the bar and out of play in the fifth minute and she was inches away from giving the Cards an early lead.
In the second half, the Cards pushed forward on offense and nearly broke through on two headers. Lucy Roberts had a header coming off a corner kick in the 51st minute that just went over the bar and out of play. Minutes later, Karsyn Cherry had a header put on frame and it was saved by the Syracuse keeper.
The Cardinals would break through in the 56th minute and it was all started by Fiona Gaißer. She made a run up the left side and dropped the ball back for Huckaby, who was just outside the box. Huckaby fired off a shot that curled inside the far post for the goal to put the Cardinals up 1-0.
Just a few minutes later, the Cardinals were threatening again with a corner kick in the 58th minute. Addie Chester sent the ball into the box and it was deflected back to Jennings. She wasted no time and volleyed the ball into the back of the net for her second goal of the season and gave the Cards a 2-0 lead.
Syracuse cut into the deficit with a goal in the 74th minute but that was all their offense could muster and the Cardinals came away with the win to improve to 2-3-1 in ACC play.
The Cardinals have a single game week on deck as they start a three-game homestand over the next two weeks. Louisville will travel to Boston College next weekend for a Saturday night match on October 14. The Cardinals and Eagles will square off at 7 p.m. ET from Chestnut Hill and the match will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
