October 14, 2023 | Women's Soccer
Lucy Roberts goal in the 84th minute got the game level
NEWTON, Mass. — The University of Louisville women's soccer team capitalized on a late corner kick to find the equalizer and ended with a 1-1 draw with Boston College Saturday night at Newton Soccer Complex. The Cardinals trailed 1-0 in the 84th minute until Lucy Roberts' header found the back of the net off a corner to give the Cardinals the point on the road and end the game in a 1-1 tie.
The Cardinals looked to take an early lead in the seventh minute when Addie Chester jumped on a mistake from the Eagles keeper. Chester collected the ball in the box after the Eagles keeper had a mishit on a clear attempt. After one touch, Chester fired it to the far post but the Eagles keeper recovered enough to deflect the ball away and out of play.
The Cardinals had another chance in the 21st minute when they used a Boston College turnover and turned it into an offensive opportunity. Chester played the ball up to Gaißer and she sent a cross into the box for Emersen Jennings. Jennings one-timed the ball towards goal but it missed just wide of the near post.
The Cardinals and Eagles went into the half at 0-0 after each team just had one shot each on goal over the first 45 minutes.
Boston College would be the first team to break through in the 56th minute on a play that started in their defensive third. The Eagles quickly played the ball up the right side and Sydney Segalla received the ball and got the cross into an open area in the box. Ella Richards was first to the ball and tucked the ball inside the right post for the opening goal of the match.
Richards nearly doubled the Eagles' lead in the 74th minute after settling a loose ball and getting it on frame but Erynn Floyd was all over it and made the save to end the Eagles chance.
The Cardinals eventually broke through nearly 10 minutes later when they got a corner in the 84th minute. Chester sent a high ball towards the back side of the box where Roberts gained positioning and got her head on it. She sent a high lofted header towards the opposite post and it tucked under the bar for the goal. It was Roberts' second goal of the season and it got the game level at 1-1.
That was the last chance for either team as the match ended at 1-1 and each team earned one point.
The Cardinals will come back to campus but will head back out on the road next week to finish off the current three-game road trip. Louisville is set to hit the road next week and face Clemson on Oct. 19 and Wake Forest on Oct. 22 for their final road games of the regular season.
