Cardinals Drop Road Results to No. 8 Clemson, 3-0
October 19, 2023 | Women's Soccer
The Cardinals held the Tigers scoreless until the 71st minute
CLEMSON, S.C. — The University of Louisville women's soccer team faced off with another top-10 team on the road and kept them off the scoreboard for the first 70 minutes of the match. No. 8 Clemson broke through in the 71st minute and came away with a 3-0 victory over the Cardinals Thursday night at Historic Riggs Field.
It was a quiet first half between the two teams as the offensive opportunities were limited. There were just three combined shots on goal from both teams and they were all saved by the respective goalkeepers which led to a 0-0 score at the half.
In the second half, it was more of the same as neither team recorded a shot on goal over the first 15 minutes of the second frame.
Clemson broke through in the 71st minute on the goal from Renee Lyles. She received a pass in the box that deflected off two Cardinals defenders before it reached her and she slotted home the ball into the back of the net for the first goal of the match.
The Tigers added their second goal in the 78th minute after Samantha Meredith scored a header on a cross from Makenna Morris.
Lyles scored her second goal of the match in the 82nd minute for the brace and increased the Tigers lead to 3-0.
The Cardinals will stay out on the road to finish off their three-game road trip. The Cardinals will bus up to Wake Forest and take on the Demon Deacons to close out the weekend. The Cardinals and Demon Deacons will square off on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. ET and it will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
