The Cardinals played with 10 players after a red card in the 28th minute
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The University of Louisville women's soccer team fell on the road to Wake Forest, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Spry Stadium. The Cardinals were forced to play with 10 players after a red card in the 28th minute and Wake's lone goal of the afternoon came on the free kick directly from the red card decision.
The Cardinals looked to have the opening goal of the match inside the eighth minute of play. Ravin Alexander hopped on a Wake Forest turnover in their defense third and a quick give and go from Addie Chester had Alexander free inside the box. She sent a shot towards the far post but it was saved and deflected away by the Wake keeper.
Wake Forest would get the first goal of the match in the 28th minute. A red card was given to Lucy Roberts on a foul that occurred just outside of the box that set up a Wake Forest free kick. Zara Chavoshi stood over the ball for the free kick and curled it inside the near post for the Demon Deacons goal. That was the only goal of the first half and Wake took a 1-0 lead into the half.
In the second half, goalkeeper Erynn Floyd kept the Cardinals in striking distance with a few key saves. With the Cardinals down to 10 players, she made a couple saves over the first 10 minutes of the half to keep the Cardinals within one goal.
With the Cardinals only playing with 10 players, it was difficult to get chances in the offensive third to find the equalizer. The Cardinals were unable to record a shot in the second half and fell to the Demon Deacons by a score of 1-0.
The Cardinals are set to return to campus with the conclusion of their three-game road trip on Sunday. They will prepare for the regular season finale, which is set for Thursday at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals will host the Blue Devils on Thursday and kick off is set for 6 p.m. with the match streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
