Cards Host Duke to Conclude Regular Season
October 25, 2023 | Women's Soccer
They are back home after three-straight road games
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Nearly two weeks after their last home game, the Cardinals return home to Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium to close out the regular season. The Cardinals are set to host the 25th-ranked Duke Blue Devils on Thursday night. The Cards and Blue Devils are set to square off at 6 p.m. ET and it will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
The Cardinals have had success at home, especially at the defensive end this season. All three of their shutouts this season have come at home and they have limited opponents' offensive chances all year. The Cardinals limited Virginia to just one goal in the 1-1 draw and the Cavaliers had scored 20 goals in seven games heading into that match. The Cards held Pitt below their season average in the 3-2 win and it was just Pitt's second loss of the season to that point. Through the nine home games this year, the Cardinals have allowed 10 goals, 38 shots on goal and 74 shots total.
The Cardinals have also had success against teams that are ranked or were previously ranked at home this season. Louisville tallied a 1-1 draw against then-ranked No. 20 Virginia back in September. It was the first point the Cardinals had recorded against the Cavaliers in their series history. The Cardinals defeated Pitt and while they were not ranked at the time of the matchup, the Panthers are ranked 20th in the most recent coaches poll.
In their last home game on Oct. 8, the Cardinals defeated Syracuse 2-1 on Senior Day. Freshman Betsy Huckaby scored her first career goal in the second half to open the scoring and Emersen Jennings tallied her second goal of the year for the game-winner.
This will be the 10th all-time matchup between the two schools and the Cardinals trail 0-4-5 in the all-time series. In the previous two matchups held in Louisville, the Cardinals are 0-1-1.
