
No 18/7 Men's and Women's Swimming Head to Missouri

Cards are back in action after the holiday break
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The No. 18/7-ranked University of Louisville men's and women's swimming and diving team is headed for a show down with long-time rival No. 22/NR Missouri Jan. 6 at 1 p.m. ET in Columbia, Mo.
The Cardinals' last meet was Nov. 18 when they completed the three-day Purdue Invitational. The Cardinal women finished with a commanding score of 947 points followed by Northwestern (716.5), Purdue (3564.5), Florida International (447), Missouri State (275), Marshall (213.5), California Baptist (163.5), Illinois State (156) and Southern Illinois (155).
The men amassed 764.5 points to finish in second with Purdue (864.5) leading the men's team rankings. Northwestern finished third (513.5), California Baptist finished fourth (429), Navy finished fifth (315), Missouri State finished sixth (307.5) and Southern Illinois was seventh (189).
The No. 7-ranked Louisville women have put up 25 Top 50 swims with five Top 10 performances. All five of the women's relays are nationally ranked with four of the five placing the in the top 7 in the nation. In particular, the 200 Free Relay and the 200 Medley Relay are both ranked No. 4 in the country. Gabi Albiero is ranked sixth in the 100 free, eighth in the 100 fly and is 13th in the 50 freestyle. Christiana Regenauer is tenth in both the 100 fly and the 50 free as well as being 13th in the 100 freestyle. Look for distance specialist Liberty Williams to be a major point producer as she is ranked seventh in the 500 free, 11th in the 1650 free, and 24th in the 1000.
The No. 18-ranked men's team has put up 11 top 50 performances so far this season. Abdelrahman El-Araby will be a factor in the sprint events with his national rankings in both the 50 and 100 free. Distance specialist Ilia Sibirtsev holds rankings in the 500, 1000, and 1650 freestyles. Denis Loktev in the 200 free and Denis Petrashov in the 100 breast have put up nationally ranked times and been reliable point producers for the Cardinals. The men are nationally ranked in three relays: the 400 free relay (24th), the 800 free relay (27th) and the 200 medley relay (14th).
Last meeting with the Tigers
The 2021-22 meet was cancelled last year due to high instances of positive COVID tests for the Tigers. In 2020-21, the Cardinal men downed Missouri 199-101 at home. UofL was without head coach Arthur Albiero, who was quarantined for COVID contact tracing protocol measures.
The Cards won both diving events, both relays and seven individual events to seal the win. Abdelrahman El-Araby won the 50 free and was on both relays. Hayden Curley won both distance events with firsts in the 1650 freestyle and the 500 free. Mitchell Whyte helped win the 200 Medley Relay and then won both the 100 and 200 backstroke. Daniel Pinto won both the 3M and 1M boards to further highlight the day.
