Tough Second Inning Sinks Cards at USF
February 19, 2022 | Baseball
Louisville took an 8-4 loss for its first defeat of the season.
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Louisville baseball team allowed six runs in the second inning and trailed the rest of the way in an 8-4 defeat on Saturday at USF.
Louisville (1-1) will wrap up its opening weekend with an early Sunday contest against Connecticut. First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m. ET.
Jared Poland and the Cardinals got off to a strong start on Saturday, working a scoreless first with a pair of strikeouts. However, things unraveled in the second inning.
A high pop lost in the sun started the inning with a double for USF (1-1) and the Cardinals added two errors to help contribute to the six-run inning.
Louisville was able to fight back though, plating four runs in the fifth to cut the deficit to just two. Jack Payton doubled home a run and a USF throwing error helped a pair of runs touch the plate. Ben Metzinger then singled back through the middle to bring another run home.
USF kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard the rest of the way however, and added single runs in the fifth and eighth innings to secure the victory.
Payton had an excellent night at the plate, going 3-for-4 in his first career multi-hit game. Cameron Masterman picked up two hits for his second straight multi-hit effort.
Cameron Robinson and Will Koger each had good outings on the mound, with both allowing just a single run in three innings of work with four strikeouts. Saturday marked the collegiate debut for Koger.
