February 20, 2022 | Baseball
Louisville was defeated 9-2 by UConn on Sunday.
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Louisville baseball team took its second straight loss, dropping a 9-2 decision against UConn on Sunday at the University of South Florida.
Louisville (1-2) opened the weekend with a victory over reigning Conference USA champion Charlotte before taking losses to USF and UConn.
The Cardinals fell behind early for the second consecutive day and were unable to recover. UConn (2-1) plated a run in the first and then added three in the second. The Huskies later tacked on four in the seventh to put the game away.
Louisville had its chances offensively, putting a pair of runners on base in five of the first seven innings. However, the Cardinals were just 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position on the day.
UofL's only scoring came in the ninth, as Austin Bode singled home a run in his first collegiate at-bat and Issac Humphrey picked up a RBI groundout.
Christian Knapczyk recorded his second multi-hit game of the weekend, going 2-for-4 at the plate on Sunday. Seven other Cardinals registered a hit in the loss.
Riley Phillips had an outstanding day on the mound for the Cards, coming out of the bullpen and tossing four scoreless innings. The southpaw allowed just two hits and struck out four in his first outing of the season.
Louisville now returns home and will play the next 18 games at Jim Patterson Stadium. The Cardinals' home opener is scheduled for Tuesday at 3 p.m. ET against Xavier.
