Somov and Albiero make ACC history winning their fifth golds in their signature events
ATLANTA -- The No. 7/10 University of Louisville had two historic swims as part of a busy Day 4 finals at the ACC Swimming and Diving Championshipsin the McAuley Aquatic Center on the campus of Georgia Tech.Â
The UofL men (935.5) trail only NC State (1128.5) followed by Virginia Tech (790), Virginia (715), Georgia Tech (592.5) Florida State (504), North Carolina (432), Pitt (361), Notre Dame (326),Â
Duke (275), Boston College (150.5), and Miami (116).
Evgenii Somov won his fifth straight ACC gold in the 100 breast. Super senior Nick Albiero picked up his fifth consecutive gold in the 200 fly putting up the second fastest time in history. The two used their extra year of eligibility granted due to COVID to extend their unprecedented and historic winning streak .See the race-by-race recap below for details.Â
In all, the Cardinals won two gold, two silver and two bronze in a busy session of racing.Â

Women's 200 Butterfly
Abigail Hay won bronze when she turned in a time of 1:54.77. Tristen Ulett touched fourth with a time of 1:55.14, also her best since becoming a Cardinal. Alena Kraus powered to a win in the C-Final with a 1:55.08, shaving almost two seconds off her prelim time which would've placed 4th in the A-final. The event was won by NC State's Abigail Arens' 1:54.11

Men's 200 Butterfly
Nicolas Albiero set a pool, school and meet record when he blazed to his fifth straight 200 butterfly ACC gold in 1:37.92 which is the second-fastest performance in history behind only Jack Conger's mark of 1:37.35 set in 2017. In the B-Final, Gustavo Saldo touched second in 1:42.75 and Denis Loktev touched in 1:45.51.

Women's 100 Backstroke
In the B-Final of the 100 backstroke, Paige Hetrick put up a 52.22, to finish and freshman Rye Ulett was right behind her with a 52.26. They finished 10th and 11th respectively overall .Â

Men's 100 Backstroke
In the men's 100 backstroke, Mitchell Whyte won silver with a time of 45.19 and teammate Nikos Sofianidis won bronze with a 46.02. In the B-Final, Dalton Lowe touched in 46.17 and Jack Wever was second in the C-Final with a 46.79.

Women's 100 Bveaststroke
In the 100 breaststroke, Mariia Astashkina put up a 59.74 to touch seventh in the A-Final just ahead of teammate Adeline Farrington. Morgan Friesen won the B-Final with a time of 59.84

Men's 100 Bveaststroke
Louisville super senior Evgenii Somov joined his teammate Albiero as a five-time ACC event champion, making history with his fifth ACC title in the 100 breast. Somov was short of last year's winning time of 51.03, a time which stands as the meet and conference record, but he pulled away from the field winning  by .50.  Teammate Denis Petrashov was seventh in the A-Final, turning in a 52.14.

Men's Platform Diving
In men's platform diving, freshman Che Stephens scored a 336.65 to get 8th overall in the finals. Kivanc Gur finished 10th with a 317.35, Daniel Pinto was 11th with a mark of 312.55 and Adam Sneden was 20th with a 259.90.

Women's 400 Medley Relay
The Cardinals finished fourth in the 400 Medley Relay when Tristen Ulett (53.03), Mariia Astashkina (59.44), Gabi Albiero (51.05) and Paige Hetrick (47.98) combined for a 3:31.50 to place third in their heat but fourth overall.

Men's 400 Medley RelayÂ
The foursome of Mitchell Whyte (45.63), Evgenii Somov (50.64), Nicolas Albiero (44.19) and Abdelrahman El-Araby (41.46) put up the silver medal time of 3:02.02, shaving five seconds off their entry time and the second fastest time in school history.Â
