Four different Cardinals score two goals each in the 19-9 loss to No. 14 Denver
DENVER, Colo. – University of Louisville women's lacrosse could not overcome No. 14 Denver, falling 19-9 Sunday afternoon at Peter Barton Stadium in Denver, Colo.
Â
"Today just comes down to who came ready to play and we didn't," said head coach Scott Teeter. "I'm proud of the battle we showed for the last three quarters. It's tough to come back after giving up eight goals in the first 15 minutes."Â
Â
With the loss, Louisville starts the season 0-2, while Denver begins the 2022 campaign 1-0.
Â
Denver got off to a fast start offensively, converting six of its first seven shots into goals. Carline Blalock got the Cardinals on the board, scoring a free position goal with 7:14 left in the first quarter. Bella Karstien notched Louisville's only other goal of the opening period, her first of the season, as the Cards found themselves down 10-2 after one.
Â
Louisville's offense was aggressive to start the second quarter with Nicole Perroni and Hannah Morris scoring back-to-back goals in the first five minutes. The Cardinals' defense got into a groove in the second, only allowing the Pioneers two goals in the period, to stay within eight and head into the half down 12-4.
Â
UofL scored five more goals in the second half with the defense continuing to limit Denver's offense, only giving up nine goals in three quarters after giving up 10 in the first quarter alone.
Â
UofL outdrew Denver 17-13,  while also committing nine fewer fouls in the contest.
Â
Blalock, Morris, Perroni and Madi McKee led the team with two goals each with McKee recording her first goal as a Cardinal.Â
Â
Freshman J Pleck was impressive in goal relief, tallying 10 saves in her collegiate debut.
Â
Louisville is back in action on Friday, Feb. 18 at 12 p.m. ET as they welcome Marquette to UofL Lacrosse Stadium for its home opener.
