Cardinals Fall at Home to #6 Notre Dame, 2-0
October 15, 2022 | Women's Soccer
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville women's soccer team faced another ranked foe Saturday night and ultimately fell to sixth-ranked Notre Dame, 2-0, at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium. Notre Dame scored in each half and the Cardinals were unable to break the Irish defense and dropped the contest that ended a three-game homestand.
The Cardinals had the first dangerous chance of the game in the 12th minute and it was caused by a defender making a play in the attacking third. Raven Alexander came up from the back line and took a shot on goal just outside the 18-yard box. Her low-driven shot had some pace but the Irish keeper scooped up the save.
Notre Dame broke open the scoring in the 17th minute on the goal from Kiki Van Zanten. She took an attempt from about 25-yards out and it tucked under the bar for the game's first goal.
That was the only goal over the first 45 minutes as Notre Dame held a 1-0 lead at the half. Both teams had six shots in the first half and two shots on goal each for the Irish and Cardinals.
In the second half, Notre Dame extended its lead in the 50th minute. Erynn Floyd made the save on the initial shot by Korbin Albert but Olivia Wingate was the first to the rebound and put it into the back of the net to put the Irish up 2-0.
The Cardinals had a couple of chances in the 77th minute as Mackenzie Geigle shot went just high of the bar. Maisie Whitsett had a shot moments later in the box but it was deflected away by an Irish defender.
Louisville will be back on the road for its final road trip of the regular season. The Cardinals will be back in action in Raleigh, N.C. as they take on NC State on Thursday, October 20. Thursday's matchup will kick off at 7 p.m. ET and will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
