Head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes collects win No. 200 in the victory
RALEIGH, N.C. — The University of Louisville women's soccer team (6-6-2, 3-5-0) bounced back with a 1-0 win on the road against NC State (7-6-4, 2-5-1) Thursday night at Dail Soccer Complex. Corinne Dente scored the game's lone goal in the first half and it was the difference as the Cardinal defense allowed just two shots on goal the entire night. With the win, head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes collected her 200th career win at the helm of the Cardinals.
The Cardinals started on the front foot and had a number of chances early in the first half.
In the 23rd minute, Ravin Alexander had a chance on net that was saved by the Wolfpack keeper. The ball was loose after the save and Mackenzie Geigle was close to slotting the rebound for the goal but the Wolfpack got out of the jam.
Moments later, the Cardinals capitalized on another opportunity in the attacking third.
Morgan Bentley made a great defensive play to get the ball and made a run into the box. She got past a Wolfpack defender and dropped a pass back to Dente unmarked just outside the six-yard box. She one-timed the pass past the Wolfpack keeper for the first goal of the match. The goal was the second of her career for Dente and her first goal since the 2019 season.
The Cardinals continued to dominate the play in the first half and took the 1-0 lead into the break. Louisville held an 11-3 shot advantage and an 8-0 lead in shots on goal.
In the second half, the Wolfpack had a few chances of their own as they looked to even the contest.
In the 60th minute, Leyah Hall-Robinson won a loose ball outside the box and turned towards goal. She fired a shot towards the neat post but Erynn Floyd stood tall and turned the shot away.
Later in the 68th minute, Mia Vaughn was making a run into the attacking third. She made her way through a few Cardinals defenders and got off a driven shot from her left foot towards the far post. Floyd extended to her left and swatted away the shot for her second save of the night.
Louisville continued the offensive pressure and tallied 13 more shots in the second half. Seven of those shots reached frame but the Wolfpack keeper kept them out of the net and did not allow the Cardinals to extend their lead.
The Cardinal defense stood tall in the second half and the two shots saved by Floyd were the only shots allowed in the second half. With the win, the Cardinals collected their seventh shutout of the season and their third shutout in ACC play.
The Cardinals will conclude their final regular season road trip on Sunday in Durham. Another top-10 opponent is on deck as the Cardinals will take on No. 10 Duke. The Cardinals and Blue Devils will square off from Durham at 1 p.m. ET and the match will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
