Cardinal women pull the upset of No. 10 Hoosiers
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 15 ranked University of Louisville women upset No. 10-ranked Indiana but the No. 11 Cardinal men fell to the No. 5 Hoosiers in a dual swimming and diving meet Friday afternoon at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.

The Cardinal women downed the Hoosiers 182-118. Louisville was led by Gabi Albiero, who had wins in the 200 medley relay, 50 free, 100 butterfly and the 400 free relay. Liberty Williams set a school record enroute to winning the 1000 free and picked up a win in the 500 free to sweep the distance events. Abby Hay took the 200 fly and the 400 IM while Arina Openysheva won the 100 free and was part of the 400 free relay squad.Â
The men fell 208-95 to the fifth-ranked Hoosiers. Highlight swims came from Haridi Sameh who won the 50 free and Daniel Sos, who ran away with the 400 IM.

The women started the meet with a win in the first event, taking top honors in the 200 Medley Relay when Tristen Ulett (25.00), Kaylee Wheeler (26.92), Christiana Regenauer (23.25) and Gabi Albiero anchored with a 21.55 for the winning time of 1:36.72. The men's foursome of Mitchell Whyte (21.90), Evgenii Somov (24.03), Nicolas Albiero (20.21) and Haridi Sameh (18.86) touched second with a time of 1:25.00.

Liberty Williams set a school record in the 1000 freestyle when she threw down a 9:33.23 for the win. Teammate Maddie Luther (9:56.68) was fourth and Paige McCormick (10:01.40 was fifth. Hayden Curley was the top male Cardinal in the 1000 with a fourth place time of 9:03.74.

Arina Openysheva touched second in the 200 free with a 1:46.41 (B-cut) time with teammates Madie Hall (1:48.27) and Diana Dunn (1:48.65) touching fifth and sixth. The men went 2-3-4 in the 200 free, led by Murilo Sartori's 1:34.47, Colton Paulson (1:35.88) and Denis Loktev (1:36.12) collecting points for UofL.

In her opening event of her swimming career, freshman Rye Ulett won the 100 back with a 53.29 (B-cut) just out-touching her sister Tristen's 53.50. Tatiana Salcutan was fourth for UofL with a time of 54.03. For the men's 100 back, Mitchell Whyte touched second in 46.56 for a B-cut. Nikos Sofianidis was fourth (48.06) and Neal Morsi was sixth in 48.69. Hoosier Gabriel Fantoni won the event with a 46.20 in a tightly contested finish.

In the 100 breaststroke, Mariia Astashkina was second, stopping the clock at 1:00.28 for a B-cut. Three other Cardinals made a B-cut time in that race with Morgan Friesen (1:01.13) was third, Kaylee Wheeler (1:01.15) was fourth and Kim Herkle was sixth in 1:01.70. Hoosier Noelle Peplowski won the event with a time of 59.75, the only swimmer under the one-minute mark. In the men's event, Evgenii Somov was second (53.54) and newcomer Denis Petrashov was third in 53.62. Aidan Kreiley was fifth in 54.37 to round out the top five with all three making B-cuts. IU's Josh Matheny won the event, stopping the clock at 53.41.

UofL went 1-3-4 in the 200 fly, led by Abby Hay's winning time of 1:55.87. Alena Kraus was right in her teammate's wake, posting a second place time of 1:56.77 and Kelly Tichenor was fourthin in 2:01.95. Hay and Kraus both recorded B-cut times. Nicolas Albiero was second in the men's 200 fly with a time of 1:42.35. Daniel Sos was sixth in 1:47.17. IU's Brendan Burns won the event in 1:40.72.

The Cardinal women grabbed the top two spots in the 50 free, led by Gabi Albiero's winning time of 22.25 (B-cut). Christiana Regenauer was second in 23.39. Fernanda Celidonio was sixth, with a 23.49 for the Cardinals. Haridi Sameh came home first in a blazing 19.19 for a B-cut . UofL's Caleb Duncan was fifth (20.01) and Michael Eastman was sixth (20.17).

In women's 3M Diving, Riley Bullock was sixth, posting a score of 229.65 and Grace Leonard was seventh with a 222.60. The event was won by IU's Kristen Hayden's 362.10. Â On the 1M, Else Praasterink was third, posting a score of 281.33 for the Cards. Grace Leonard was sixth (266.03) and Riley Bullock was ninth with a 224.63.

In men's diving, Daniel Pinto was third on the 1M board with a score of 329.33. Kivanc Gur was fourth with a 310.20 and Adam Sneden was fifth with a 302.70. IU's Carson Tyler won with the top score of 411.83. Â In the 3M board, Pinto was second, posting a score of 379.58. Â Diving exhibition on platform, Alekzander Popper put up a 299.40 and Che Stephens posted a 327.15 with Else Praasterink scoring a 299.63 all three made zone cuts with those scores.

Cardinal Arina Openysheva turned in the fastest time in the 100 free with a 48.69 just ahead of her teammate Christiana Regenauer's second place time of 49.19. Madie Hall was fourth with a 50.11 for the Ville. Â Haridi Sameh (43.13, B-cut) was out-touched in the men's 100 free by .03 as IU's Rafael Miroslow's 43.10 took top honors. Cardinal Murilo Sartori was fifth with a 43.62 for a B-cut.

In the 200 back, UofL's Rye Ulett dueled IU's Anna Peplowski (1: 54.19) in an exciting finish. The Cardinal freshman went 1:54.71 for second place and a B-cut. Tatiana Salcutan was nipping at their heels with a third place finish of 1:55.53 also a B-cut and Paige Hetrick was fifth in 1:58.70. For the men in the same event, Daniel Sos was third (1:45.02, B-cut) and Mitchell Whyte was fifth (1:46.96) just a tick ahead of teammate Nikos Sofianidis. IU's Brendan Burns threw down a winning time of 1:41.18.

Morgan Friesen was third (2:10.70), Kim Herkle was fourth (2:11.85) with all three times being good for B-cuts. Diana Dunn was sixth, stopping the clock at 2:16.09. Cardinal newcomer Denis Petrashov touched fourth for the men in the 200 breast with a time of 1:57.66 and B-cut. Evgenii Somov was fifth (1:59.40) and Aidan Kreiley was sixth (1:59.67). Hoosier Josh Metheny won the event with a time of 1:57.06 in a wild finish that had four swimmers touch within .6 seconds of each other.

Maddie Luther was third for the Cardinals (4:50.47) and Polina Nevmovenko was sixth with a 4:54.62. For the men, Eli Shoyat was third with a 4:24.24, ahead of the fifth and sixth place finishes of his teammates Denis Loktev (4:28.88) and Murilo Sartori (4:29.14).

Gabi Albiero beat the field of the 100 butterfly by a second with a B-cut time of 51.63 as the first of a 1-2-3 Cardinals sweep of the 100 fly. Tristen Ulett was second (52.70), Alena Kraus was third (53.98) and Kelly Tichenor was fifth (55.15). Nick Albiero was third in the men's 100 fly with a time of 46.37. Dalton Lowe was fourth (46.47) and Greyson Alarcon was eighth (49.69). IU's Brendan Burke came home in 45.49 for the win.

Rye Ulett was second in 4:15.70 and Kim Herkle was fourth in 4:16.16 both for B-cuts. Paige McCormick turned in the sixth-place time of 4:19.36. Â Daniel Sos turned in the winning time for the men, throwing down a 3:46.22 for a B-cut. Hayden Curley was fourth for the Cards with a time of 3:53.86.

The Louisville women's 400 free relay team of Gabi Albiero (48.79), Christiana Regenauer (48.65), Tristen Ulett (48.61) and an anchor of 48.22 by Arina Openysheva put the Cardinals into the wall in 3:14.26 for an A-cut. For the men, the foursome of Haridi Sameh (43.04), Nicolas Albiero (42.85), Murilo Sartori (43.03) and Michael Eastman 43.09) combined for the second-place time of 2:52.01.
