
No. 13 Cardinals Head West for Arizona State Tournament

Louisville, Cal Poly, TAMU-CC and ASU will square off this weekend
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The No. 13 University of Louisville volleyball opens regular season play this weekend in Tempe, Ariz. for a three-match slate in the Sun Devil Volleyball Classic on Aug. 27-28.
The Cardinals will square off against Cal Poly in the first match of a double-header on Friday, Aug. 27 at 1:00 p.m. ET before taking on Texas A&M- Corpus Christi at 8:00 p.m. ET. UofL will conclude action on Saturday, Aug. 28 with a match against Arizona State at 7:00 p.m. ET.
Cal Poly vs. Louisville
This weekend marks the second meeting between Louisville and Cal Poly, the first of which came on Sep. 10, 2006, and resulted in 3-2 win for the Mustangs. Led by second year head coach Caroline Walters, Cal Poly has won the Big West title in two of the last three seasons and has made an NCAA Tournament appearance three consecutive years. In Walters' first season at the helm, the Mustangs finished with a 21-9 record and second in the Big West at 13-3. The Mustangs return two 2019 First Team All-Big West selections in setter Avalon DeNecochea and middle blocker Meredith Phillips. After not competing in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Friday's match will mark Cal Poly's first in 629 days.
TAMU-CC vs. Louisville
The Cardinals match against Texas A&M- Corpus Christi will be the first meeting between the two programs. Last season, the Islanders won the Southland Conference tournament championship for the third time in program history and enter this season as the preseason favorite to win the conference. Head coach Steve Green enters his seventh season with Corpus Christi and led the team to its third NCAA appearance last season. The Islanders return Southland Setter of the Year Faith Panhans and Southland Libero of the Year Carissa Barnes, as well as three other Southland Preseason All-conference selections in Rachel Young, Kylie Filipiak and Montez Uigaese.
Arizona State vs. Louisville
Louisville's last match of the weekend against Arizona State will be the fourth meeting between these schools. Louisville is 2-1 against the Sun Devils and won their last meeting 3-1 on Sep. 7, 2019 at home. In the 2020-21 season, Arizona State, led by fifth-year head coach Sanja Tomasevic, finished ninth in the PAC-12 with a 6-14 record. ASU returns 13 players for the 2021 season including, All-PAC-12 honorable mentions Iman Isanovic and Marta Levinska.

The 2020-21 season saw the Cardinals make their 29th appearance in the NCAA Tournament when they played in the Omaha NCAA "Bubble", ending in a Sweet Sixteen loss to Washington. UofL has three returning All-Americans in middle blocker Anna Stevenson, ACC Setter of the Year Tori Dilfer and ACC Freshman of the Year Anna DeBeer as well as Amaya Tillman, who was ACC Defensive Player of the Year as well as All-ACC performer Aiko Jones as the starting core. Louisville enters the season ranked No. 13 in the nation and was pegged second in the ACC Preseason Poll.
