Wave 1 of US Olympic Swim Trials Begins Friday in Omaha
June 03, 2021 | Swimming & Diving
Ten Cardinals are in Wave I with 21 more to come in Wave II
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Ten University of Louisville swimmers will take their shot at making the US Olympic team as Wave I gets underway on Friday morning at the 2021 US Olympic Trials in the CHI Health Center in Omaha, NE. Wave I will compete June 4-7.
Â
In all, 31 Cardinals will compete for slots on the squad with the remaining 21 swimmers competing in Wave II on June 13-20. To limit athlete numbers and promote health and safety amid the coronavirus pandemic this week, USA Swimming split its 2021 Olympic Trials meet into two separate waves.
Â
Louisville's contingent will be highlighted by Michael Eastman, who holds the top seed in the 100M freestyle. Four other Cardinals are seeded in the top ten in their event: Tanner Cummings (8th in 100M Free, 9th in 50M free), Gabe Orbe (9th in 200M Fly), and Aidan Kreiley  (8th in 200M Breast).
Â
The current Olympic Trials qualifying standards will allow athletes into the four-day Wave I meet, while a new, tougher standard will allow athletes into the Wave II meet. The top two finishers in each event at Wave I will be able to compete in the Wave II meet the following week, with the Olympic team selected from the Wave II results. USA Swimming is expecting around 19 more qualifiers per event.
Â
The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games are scheduled for Friday July 23, 2021 – Sunday August 8, 2021 in Tokyo, Japan.
