Louisville came up short in the first of two meetings with its in-state rival.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In the first of two meetings between the in-state rivals, the fifth-ranked University of Louisville baseball team lost 11-7 against Kentucky on Tuesday evening at Jim Patterson Stadium.

Louisville (18-9) got home runs from Henry Davis and Alex Binelas on the night, their eighth and fifth of the season, respectively. Davis and Lucas Dunn each went 2-for-4 at the plate, while Trey Leonard led the way with a 3-for-5 showing.

Kentucky (19-7) got off to a fast start on Tuesday, getting a three-run home run in the top of the second inning. However, the Cardinals answered with three of their own in the bottom half with run-scoring knocks from Leonard and Dunn, and a sacrifice fly from Levi Usher.

The Wildcats responded with five across in the top of the third, which would prove to be enough offense to secure the victory.

The Cardinals got a pair of runs back on Binelas' home run in the third, but Kentucky answered with two of its own in the fifth.

Davis' solo shot in the sixth brought Louisville back within four, but it would get no closer as the teams exchanged runs over the final two innings.

Eight different pitchers took the mound on the night for the Cardinals, with Evan Webster, Cameron Robinson, Garrett Schmeltz and Carter Lohman turning in scoreless outings.

Louisville wraps up a seven-game homestand with three games against Florida State this weekend. First pitch of the series on Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.
