Maisie Whitsett scored on a penalty kick at the 16-minute mark to propel the Cardinals to victory.
DAYTON, Ohio – University of Louisville women's soccer opened their spring season with a 1-0 victory at Dayton on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 5-5 in their 2020-2021 campaign. The Flyers fall to 3-2 on the season.
"It's always nice to start the season with a win," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "It wasn't our best performance, but it was certainly one we can grow from."
Maisie Whitsett gave the Cardinals the early 1-0 lead at the 16-minute mark when she successfully scored on a penalty kick. The goal marked her first of the season.
In the first half, Louisville had five shots on goal and limited the Flyers to just one shot, which was saved by Gabby Kouzelos at the 25-minute mark.
Louisville's impressive defense continued in the second half as the Cardinals held Dayton to just four shots and none on target.
Six Cardinals finished the match with shots. Whitsett and Morgan Bentley each recorded two shots, while Sarah Hernandez, Nadege L'Esperance, Ravin Alexander and Taylor Kerwin each finished with one shot.
The Cardinals return home to Lynn Stadium where they will host Auburn on March 20 at 5 p.m. ET.
