Kirian, Cardinals Roll in Opener at NC State
March 19, 2021 | Baseball
Louisville picked up a 13-1 victory on Friday night in Raleigh.
RALEIGH, N.C. – It was a dominant performance from start to finish for the seventh-ranked University of Louisville baseball team on Friday night, as the Cardinals downed NC State 13-1.
Michael Kirian (4-0) stepped on the mound for the first time with a 2-0 lead and never looked back. The southpaw retired the first 11 batters he faced and carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning. Kirian closed out the night with one run allowed on two hits in 7.1 innings and struck out a career-high 13 for his fourth win.
Henry Davis got the Cardinals started off on the right foot Friday, launching a two-run home run in the bottom of the first. It was the fifth of the season for the sophomore and the first of two huge hits for him early in the contest.
One inning later, Davis stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and promptly unloaded them with a three-run double into the left field corner.
While Kirian was cruising on the mound, the Louisville (12-5, 5-2 ACC) offense kept adding on. Cameron Masterman banged a run-scoring double off the right field wall in the fifth and Ben Metzinger had a bases-clearing double of his own later in the frame to make it a 9-0 game.
Lucas Dunn got in on the act in the seventh, lining his second home run of the year over the right field wall. Alex Binelas and Levi Usher then capped the night with RBI singles in the eighth inning, as the Cardinals matched their season-high in runs.
With plenty of offensive cushion, Kirian rolled into the eighth inning with a zero still in the hit column. After a leadoff walk, NC State (4-7, 1-6) hit a clean single through the right side to end the no-hit bid. A run-scoring single followed, but Evan Webster entered and limited the damage to just the one run before closing things down in the ninth.
Eleven different Cardinals had a hit in the win with five different players tallying a pair of hits. Davis finished the night with a career-best five RBIs.
The series continues on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
