Cardinals Win Bronze at ACC Championships Day 1 Competition

Day 1 is in the books, with three days left of racing at the GAC
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- After the first day of competition at the 2021 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships, the University of Louisville women are in sixth place after three events at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Virginia leads the pack with 165, just ahead of Duke (144), Notre Dame (144), NC State (142), Virginia Tech (137), (Louisville 124), Miami (124), Georgia Tech (124), North Carolina (112), Florida State (96), Pitt (90) and Boston College 60.

In the first event of the meet, the Cardinals' 200 Medley Relay team of Ashlyn Schoof (24.48), Kaylee Wheeler (26.40), Christiana Regenauer (23.65) and Gabi Albiero (21.60) touched in 1:36.15 for Bronze. It was the tenth fastest relay all time for the Cards. Virginia set an American, NCAA, U.S. Open and ACC Record of 1:33.11 that was set in 2018 by Stanford. UVA's Caroline Gmelich, Alexis Wenger, Alexa Cuomo, and Kate Douglass combined for a 1:32.93 in the relay. Â

In a blazing fast night of racing, Virginia won their second relay when the Cavaliers touched in at 6:54.31, resetting their own 2019 800 Free Relay ACC meet record of 6:55.22. and putting up the fastest relay time in the NCAA this year. The Cards touched fourth when Alena Kraus (1:46.03), Tristen Ulett (1:47.37), Paige Hetrick (1:47.41) and Diana Dunn (1:46.41) combined forces for a 7:07.22

Over in the diving well, the men competed in the 1M and the women were diving 3M alternating between the two boards to finish diving prior to the swimmers arriving to the venue to minimize contact. For the Louisville men, Daniel Pinto scored a 310.75 to finish 10th, head of Adam Sneden's 13th place score of 305.30 and Kivanc Gur, who was 22nd with a mark of 275.10. For the women, on the 3M board, Abbie Erickson put up the best score for the Cards with a 244.80 and 9th place, just missing the finals. Kayla Wilson posted a mark of 277.50, good for 21st and Else Praasterink was 29th with a 233.35.

Tomorrow's action begins at 11 a.m. and will include the 500 free, the 200 IM and the 50 freestyle. The men divers will move to the 3M board and the women will compete in 1M.
