Busboom Kelly Earns 100th Career Win as No. 2 Cards Sweep Virginia Tech

Blacksburg, Va. –  University of Louisville head volleyball coach Dani Busboom Kelly earned her 100th win as the No. 2-ranked Cardinals held off upset-minded Virginia Tech 25-20, 30-28, 25-22 Friday night in Cassell Coliseum.

The Cardinals hit .295 with five aces and six total blocks. Anna Stevenson led the Cardinals with 13 kills and three blocks with Aiko Jones adding seven kills, three aces and a block.  Anna DeBeer and Claire Chaussee each added eight kills. Tori Dilfer distributed the ball with 36 assists and libero Elena Scott had eight digs.

UofL remains unbeaten at 17-0 (7-0 in the ACC) notching its 15th three-set sweep for eight in a row. Virginia Tech drops to 9-10 and 0-7 in the ACC.Â

Virginia Tech hit .210 with three aces and seven blocks, marking the first time the Cards have been outblocked all season. The Hokies got 11 kills from Marisa Cerchio. Angel Robinson and Talyn Jackson each had four blocks with Jackson adding 34 assists.

The Cardinals head to Winston-Salem where they will take on Wake Forest on Sunday, Oct. 17 at 1 p.m. as ACC play continues.

Set 1
In set one UofL showed patience paired with .360 hitting to outlast a revved up Virginia Tech squad. Anna Stevenson led with five kills in a set that had four ties and two lead changes. The Cards took the lead for good at 12-11 on a kill by Aiko Jones. Virginia Tech hung on, trailing by only one at 21-20 on a kill by Griere Hughes but the Hokies did not score again as Louisvile posted the 25-20 win.
Set 2
The Cardinals popped out to a 5-1 lead early in the second stanza but VT tied at seven on a block by Angel Robinson and took the lead on a kill by Cera Powell at 9-8. An ace by Robinson gave the Hokies a three point lead at 13-10. UofL retook the lead on a swing by Claire Chaussee at 14-13. The teams traded points with 16 ties and six lead changes down the stretch. Â The Cardinals fought off four set points before winning 30-28 to take a 2-0 set lead into the break. Â It took kills from Anna DeBeer and Anna Stevenson for the win and the seventh deuce match of the season.

The Cardinals seemed to have matters in hand after the break and led by seven points at 21-14 and Tech was out of timeouts. However, the Hokies battled back to within one at 23-22 after a Cardinal error. But two straight kills by Chaussee gave the Cardinals the 25-22 win .
