Divers Head to NCAA Zone C Qualifying Meet
March 10, 2020 | Swimming & Diving
Cardinals will compete for slots on NCAA roster in Lexington.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Along with the program-best 12 swimmers for the women and 10 for the men, the University of Louisville diving team will compete for spots on the NCAA Championship roster at the NCAA Zone C Championships in Lexington, Ky. The competition runs from March 12-14 at the Lancaster Aquatic Center.
Â
"This NCAA Zone C meet serves as our qualifier for the NCAA Championships," said Ryan Rougeux, UofL diving coach. "I'm excited to see what our team can do this week. We have four freshmen competing and some returning veterans who all have a great shot at qualifying for NCAAs. It's awesome to have this meet so close to home at a pool we are all comfortable with. The top seven divers on springboard and top 10 divers on platform will advance from this meet."
Â
The Cardinal have nine divers who have made qualifying scores and will compete for a slot. The competition will begin with the men's 3-meter and women's 1-meter on Thursday at 1 p.m., followed by the men's 1-meter and the women's 3-meter on Friday at 1 p.m. The meet will conclude with the men's and women's platform on Saturday at 11 a.m."
Â
The top 18 divers from both the 1-meter and 3-meter prelims will advance to the final round each day of competition, while the top 10 on platform will qualify for finals. Once a diver posts an auto-qualifying finish in an event, he or she only has to be among the top 12 to earn the NCAA Championships berth in the other events.
Â
The Cardinals will be represented by Molly Fears, Michaela Sliney, Brianna Price, Abbie Erickson, Ellie Dodd, Daniel Pinto, Kivanc Gur, Sky Geovanni and Adam Sneden. Â Each diver will compete in all three events.
Â
The UofL divers combined for 118 points at the ACC Championships. Molly Fears made finals in all three events to be the top scorer for the women. She was Louisville's first All-American diver a year ago at the NCAAs. Â Daniel Pinto's top finish at the ACCs was fifth in the 1-M and he led the male divers in points.
