Cardinals past and present will race in Indy in three-day meet
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sixteen members of the University of Louisville men's and women's swim team will return to racing this weekend at the Toyota U.S. Open Championships on Nov. 12-14 at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind.
Â
While this event has traditionally featured nearly 800 athletes in one location, the 2020 Toyota U.S. Open will be split across nine different sites to ensure swimmers and coaches can participate safely in a less-crowded environment. All local, state and federal health guidelines will be strictly adhered to at each location and entry limits will reflect these local restrictions.
Â
The meet's multi-site format will consist of four-timed finals sessions and both a women's and men's flight per session. Results from each of the nine sites will be combined by USA Swimming and published in a comprehensive results report, allowing over 1,800 athletes to compete asynchronously from coast to coast. All events will be swum in long course meters.
Â
Louisville women competing include Gabi Albiero, Morgan Friesen, Alena Kraus, Christiana Regenauer, Tatiana Salcutan, Maria Sumida, Tristen Ulett, and Kaylee Wheeler. Kraus is seeded second in both the 100m and 200m butterfly while Salcutan currently ranks second in the 200m backstroke.
Â
Nicolas Albiero, Hayden Curley, Michael Eastman, Colton Paulson, Ilia Sibirtsev, Nikos Sofianidis, Evgenii Somov, and Jack Wever will represent the Cardinals on the men's side. Somov holds the second-fastest seed time in the 100m breaststroke and Paulson ranks No. 2 in the 100m freestyle.
Â
Former Louisville standouts Mallory Comerford, Casey Fanz, Marcelo Acosta, Andrej Barna, Carlos Claverie, and Zach Harting will also be competing this weekend in Indy. Fanz owns the top seed time in the 50m freestyle as Comerford does the same in the 100m freestyle, with Harting having the fastest entry time in the 200m butterfly.
