
Chinyelu Asher and Jamaica Begin Play in the 2019 FIFA World Cup on Sunday

Louisville, Ky. – Today marks the start of the world's largest women's sporting event, the FIFA World Cup. On Sunday, former Louisville standout Chinyelu Asher and the Jamaica National Team will start their bid to try to make history and advance to the knockout round of the World Cup.
Jamaica will face Brazil for their first match in group play on Sunday. All the games of the FIFA Women's World Cup can be seen live on the Fox Networks.
Asher spent one season with the Cardinals, transferring from Purdue. She made an immediate impact in her final season with the Cardinals, starting in the midfield all 18 matches. She finished the season with one goal and one assist. In her three seasons at Purdue she scored nine goals and dished out eight assists for 26 points.
In her professional career, Asher won a championship with Colombia's Independiente Santa Fe and joined Norwegian side Stabaek at the end of 2018.
FIFA Women's World Cup
Over a month long period, the best soccer players and teams in the world compete against each other while representing their countries in an attempt to earn the right to be called World Champions.
The first Women's World Cup was hosted by China in 1991 and has been played every four years since. In the six editions of the tournament played so far, four different countries have lifted the World Cup trophy, two of those, the United States and Germany, have won the World Cup twice. The Women's World Cup and international game in general has grown substantially since that first tournament which featured 12 countries. This year's tournament being held in France and will feature 24 National Teams for the second time in the tournaments history.
