Louisville tallied its 17th straight victory over the Irish on Friday night.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The fourth-ranked Louisville baseball team opened its weekend series at Notre Dame with a 2-0 victory on Friday night at Frank Eck Stadium in South Bend, Ind.
After three weeks of the offense stealing the show, it was the pitching staff that got the job done on Friday for the Cardinals. Louisville (37-9, 16-6 ACC) tallied its sixth shutout of the season and 17th consecutive victory over the Fighting Irish dating back to 2013.
Reid Detmers (9-2) was in total control in the series opener, tossing seven scoreless innings with just one hit allowed. The lefthander struck out seven and walked four. It was the fourth start of the season for the sophomore in which he allowed one hit or less.
Detmers is now tied for the national lead with nine victories on the season and his seven strikeouts give him 120 on the year, moving him to sixth-most in a single season in program history.
Michael Kirian and Michael McAvene combined to handle the final two innings for the Cardinals, with Kirian getting the first two outs of the eighth and McAvene handling the last four. McAvene registered his fifth save of the season.
Both teams went in order in the opening inning, but the Cardinals broke through in the second. Logan Wyatt singled up the middle to lead off the inning and moved to third after a pair of outs. Zach Britton then rolled a groundball to the first baseman and was called out at first base on the toss to the pitcher. However, the call was overturned after review showed Britton beating the pitcher to the bag giving Louisville the early advantage.
Notre Dame (19-24, 12-13) registered its only hit against Detmers on a bunt single in the third, but the Cardinal starter got out of the inning unscathed. Detmers stranded a pair of runners in the sixth as well before closing out his night with a perfect seventh.
The Cardinals picked up an insurance run in the fifth, with Tyler Fitzgerald singling through the right side with two away to score Lucas Dunn from second.
Louisville totaled just four hits on the evening, but the two run-scoring singles proved to be enough.
The series continues on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m., ET.
