The Cardinals won their 18th consecutive game over the Irish on Saturday.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Bobby Miller tossed eight strong innings and Alex Binelas hit a go-ahead three-run homer to give the fourth-ranked Louisville baseball team a 3-1 victory over Notre Dame at Frank Eck Stadium on Saturday.
Louisville (38-9, 17-6 ACC) has now won a season-best eight consecutive games overall and extended its winning streak over the Fighting Irish to 18 straight.
Bobby Miller (4-0) kept the Cardinals in the ballgame on Saturday, limiting Notre Dame (19-25, 12-14) to just one run on three hits through eight innings. The righthander retired the first 10 batters of the game before a double and single plated Notre Dame's only run of the date in the fourth.
The Cardinals had scoring opportunities throughout the day, but never found the hit needed to break through in the scoring column. Louisville had 10 baserunners in the first seven innings, but still trailed 1-0 heading to the eighth.
Lucas Dunn led off with a four-pitch walk to start the eighth, but was still standing on first base after a strikeout and flyout. With Logan Wyatt at the plate, Dunn tried to advance on a ball in the dirt, but was called out at second. Upon review, Dunn was able to avoid the tag and get his right hand on the bag and the call was overturned.
Wyatt finished the plate appearance with his 54th walk of the season, bringing Binelas to the plate with a pair of runners on. The freshman hammered the first pitch he saw over the right field wall for his ninth home run of the season to push the Cardinals in front for the first time.
Miller finished off his outing with a perfect bottom of the eighth, but the Irish had one final threat in them.
Michael Kirian entered the game to start the ninth and needed just six pitches to record the first two outs. However, back-to-back singles put the tying runs on and a walk loaded the bases. The Cardinals then turned the ball over to Michael McAvene, who closed out the victory with a groundout for his sixth save of the season and second in as many days.
Louisville and Notre Dame will finish off the series at 1:00 p.m., ET on Sunday.
