April 05, 2019 | Baseball
The Cardinals lost the first of three at Clemson 5-1 on Friday night.
CLEMSON, S.C. – In the opening game of the weekend series, the eighth-ranked Louisville baseball team took a 5-1 loss at No. 13 Clemson on Friday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
The loss snaps Louisville's (23-7, 9-4 ACC) six-game winning streak and is just the second loss for the Cardinals at Clemson in seven games since joining the ACC in 2015.
Reigning National Pitcher of the Month Reid Detmers (5-2) suffered his second loss of the season, allowing five runs over six innings of work. Detmers struck out 10 for the sixth time in eight starts this season. Jack Perkins pitched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts out of the bullpen.
For the 20th time in 30 games, it was Louisville that struck first on Friday night. Alex Binelas was hit by a pitch with two away and Justin Lavey made it hurt with a double into the gap that brought Binelas all the way around for the game's first run.
However, the Clemson (23-7, 10-3) offense did the rest of the damage on the night. The Tigers moved in front on a three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning. Clemson then added a second home run on the very next pitch to make it 4-1 game.
The Tigers hit their third home run of the game leading off the fifth inning to stretch the margin to four and the game's final margin.
Louisville had scoring chances throughout the night, getting the leadoff hitter on base in four of the game's final five innings, however it couldn't find the big hit with runners on.
Binelas, Lavey, Drew Campbell and Danny Oriente had the four hits on the night for the Cardinals.
Louisville and Clemson will continue the series on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 5:00 p.m., ET.
