Offensive Explosion Leads No. 12 Louisville Past No. 2 NC State

Louisville swept Saturday’s doubleheader 14-10 and 14-2 in Raleigh, N.C.
RALEIGH, N.C. – Fireworks were on display in Raleigh on Saturday, as the 12th-ranked Louisville baseball team swept a doubleheader at No. 2 North Carolina State 14-10 and 14-2. The games were played at Doak Field at Dail Park.
The victories moved Louisville (27-8, 12-5 ACC) into a tie atop the ACC Atlantic Division standings with the Wolfpack. The Cardinals set season-highs in runs and hits on Saturday, finishing with 14 runs on 18 hits in both games of the doubleheader.
The scoring started early and often for the Cardinals as they jumped on the board just four batters into the opening game. Jake Snider doubled off the left field wall with one away and Tyler Fitzgerald followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Logan Wyatt cashed in the first scoring chance with a RBI groundout to plate the first run.
NC State (29-7, 12-5) answered back with a run of its own in the bottom half of the frame, but the Louisville offensive attack took over from there.
Singles from Henry Davis, Drew Campbell and Justin Lavey loaded the bases in the second inning and Lucas Dunn pushed the Cardinals back in front with a groundball.
The game was still 2-1 an inning later with runners on the corners and two outs in the third. Alex Binelas opened up the floodgates with a line drive home run into the trees in right field to give UofL a 5-1 lead. Fitzgerald added two more to the lead with a bases loaded single and Wyatt plated a pair with a double to the wall in right-centerfield.
For the inning, the Cardinals sent 11 men to the plate with seven touching home plate to make it 9-1 through two-and-a-half innings.
The Wolfpack cut into the lead with three solo home runs to bring it to a five-run game after five, but Louisville responded with three more runs in the top of the sixth to stretch the advantage back out to eight.
NC State kept chipping away though. The Wolfpack got a run in the sixth and cut the Cardinals' lead to just three behind four runs in the seventh. NC State loaded the bases with two down in the seventh, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate. However, Michael McAvene blew a 3-2 fastball by the hitter to preserve the lead.
Binelas put the final nail in the coffin with a two-out, two-run double in the eighth inning to help secure the game one victory.
Reid Detmers (6-2) was the beneficiary of the offensive output, allowing five runs on eight hits for his sixth win of the season. McAvene recorded the final seven outs for his fourth save.
Seven Cardinals had multiple hits in the game, with Davis, Campbell and Lavey all picking up three. Binelas was 2-for-4 with a career-best five RBI.
The second game was much of the same from an offensive standpoint. Louisville was kept quiet for the first two innings, but the offense got rolling in the third.
Zeke Pinkham led off with a single and Trey Leonard brought him home with a ringing triple into the left-center gap. Snider followed with a line drive through the infield to double the lead at 2-0.
For the second time on the day, the Cardinals put together a seven-run inning, this time in the fourth. Three straight singles notched the first run of the inning and Lavey bounced a ball through the middle to bring a pair of runs across the plate.
Two batters later, Fitzgerald doubled into the left field corner with the bases loaded, clearing the bases and upping the margin to 8-0. Wyatt capped the frame with a blistering single to centerfield for the seventh run of the inning. Louisville tallied seven runs on eight hits with 13 guys coming to the plate.
Nick Bennett (5-2) had more than enough offense to work with on the mound from there, holding the Wolfpack scoreless through the first five innings before allowing his only two runs of the night in the sixth. The southpaw struck out eight and gave up just six hits. The victory was the 18th of Bennett's career, moving him into a tie for 10th place on Louisville's career win list.
The Cardinals tacked on three more runs in the sixth and two in the seventh, including Wyatt's fourth home run of the season.
Jack Perkins closed out the game with three scoreless innings for his first collegiate save. The freshman struck out four and retired the first eight hitters he faced.
All nine starters had at least one hit for the Cardinals in the nightcap, led by three-hit games from Wyatt and Binelas.
Louisville and NC State will wrap up the series on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m., ET.

- Louisville has now scored double digit runs in three consecutive games for the first time since Feb. 18-22, 2017.
- Louisville tallied double digit runs in both games of a doubleheader for the first time since March 16, 2004 against Murray State (13-1, 13-4).
- The 28 runs scored on Saturday were the most in a doubleheader for the Cardinals since March 23, 1991 when they scored 40 in two games against Western Illinois.
- The 28 runs were also the most runs scored by Louisville in consecutive ACC games since joining the conference in 2015.
