Louisville shuts out Boston College 4-0 for its fifth straight victory.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The eighth-ranked Louisville baseball team kicked off ACC play with a 4-0 victory over Boston College on Friday night at Jim Patterson Stadium.
The win was the fifth straight for the Cardinals (10-3, 1-0 ACC), who have won their conference opener in all five seasons since joining the ACC.
Reid Detmers (3-0) was masterful on the mound, tossing 7.2 scoreless innings with just three hits allowed and 13 strikeouts. The southpaw has now pitched 23.1 consecutive scoreless innings and has double digit strikeouts in three straight starts.
In his last three starts, Detmers has pitched 22.2 innings without allowing a run on just four hits, while striking out 38 and walking just two.
Louisville jumped on the board in the first inning on Friday night, cashing in a leadoff walk. Tyler Fitzgerald reached on an infield single and Danny Oriente snuck a ball through the left side to score Jake Snider for the game's first run.
The contest remained at 1-0 until the sixth inning, as both starting pitchers settled in. Detmers retired 18 straight hitters after giving up a two-out single in the first, until Boston College (7-5, 0-1) finally picked up its second hit in the seventh.
A leadoff walk was the catalyst for the Cardinals again in the sixth, as UofL finally got back in the run column. Logan Wyatt drew his conference-leading 21st walk of the season and scored on Drew Campbell's two-out double. The BC reliever then uncorked back-to-back wild pitches to allow Campbell to make it a 3-0 game.
The Cardinals took advantage of more shakiness from the Eagles in the seventh as a passed ball and an error brought home Justin Lavey, who had singled to start the inning.
Meanwhile, Detmers continued his work on the mound, turning the ball over to Michael McAvene with a runner on and two away in the eighth. McAvene walked the first hitter he faced, but recorded a big strike out to leave the potential tying run standing in the on deck circle.
McAvene then slammed the door shut with a perfect ninth to wrap up the victory.
The weekend series continues on Saturday at Jim Patterson Stadium, with the game moved up to 10:00 a.m., ET due to inclement weather in the forecast.
